3.1 Phillip Lim Initials

I hate to be a naysayer, but I have some qualms about Phillip Lim's new line of luxe lingerie. I am a huge fan of his beautiful ready-to-wear collections (a prized possession in my closet being one of his flutter sleeve silk blouses with a hand-sewn latticework yoke) so I was thrilled to hear about the foray into intimates when it was announced this Spring. But now that I've seen the pictures, I must say...I'm disappointed. (See more photos at High Snobbette.) On paper, the collection sounds tailor-made for Lille: beaded bralettes, silk boyshorts, and color blocked slips, all made to be shown off. But upon closer inspection, we see countless puckers, bunching and general schlumpiness on sure-to-be-pricey styles that are very reminiscent of Araks, Dessous, The Lake and Stars and VPL. One of my biggest beefs with the lingerie industry is the disproportionate amount of companies (particularly the ones backed by investors) that are run by men. That's why it's been exciting for me to see so many young, talented, independent women around the world starting their own labels and doing it better in the last few years. Sure, these designers have had their growing pains and fit issues - bras require some pretty complicated construction! And I'm not saying that Phillip Lim shouldn't do lingerie, but if he's going to steal from women who have been making beautiful, high-end, luxurious cotton and silk bralettes for years and claim that he's breaking new ground, then he should at least make sure that they're not ill-fitting. Perhaps the next collection will be better...I'm fully prepared to eat my words, if so. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments section!
