Halloween Inspiration: Flashdance
Posted on October 13 2012
It's no secret that we are big fans of 'dancer style' here at Lille, owing in part to my 15+ years as a semi-professional ballet/tap/jazz/modern/kabuki dancer. I never intended to make it an employee requirement, but it seems that every Lille gal has at least a tiny bit of dance experience. That being said, it's no wonder our Halloween Inspiration series always includes at least a tutu or two. This year, for our first costume idea blog post, we'll revive an oldie but a goodie, with Jennifer Beals in that iconic sweatshirt in Flashdance: It's the 80s movie I love to hate/hate to love, and I know I'm not alone in that sentiment. (One good friend of mine in college even did an homage to it for her senior thesis dance performance, complete with legwarmers and sweatbands, and of course, everyone loved it.) Bruckheimer and Lyne have to be two of the biggest misogynists in Hollywood, and this shallow film is rife with embarrassments to any self-respecting feminist, but I have a hard time turning away from it when it's on TV. I found it hugely offensive as a young aspiring dancer, but grew to love it for the time-capsule costumes, awesome soundtrack and wacky, music-video style dance sequences by uncredited French dancer, Marine Jahan. Love it or hate it, it's an easy costume to pull off, and it gives you a good excuse to buy the cozy Heather Slouchy Tee by Eberjey. Layer it with the Woolen Lace Leggings by Hanro and legwarmers for a warm, subtly sexy costume, and every girl in a tight, skimpy outfit will be sooo jealous of your comfort level.
